Contrary to it’s name anyone who is exposed to cold water or cold wind in the ears over an extended time, surfers, divers, kayakers, sailors, can get “surfer’s ear”

Exostosis within the ear canal.

In very simple terms it is the promotion of bone growths in the canal of the ear. These continue to grow and eventually can impair hearing to the point of total deafness.

Because the canal is being closed over, infections can set in where the ear is unable to drain properly.

It is thought to be part of a defence mechanism our bodies put into place over a period of time. Basically cold water next to the ear drum can be damaging and the body recognises this so it reacts, it reacts by promoting bone growth in the canal to protect the ear drum.
